County Advisory Board Business Spotlight — Recognizing Owner Gavin Lowe

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Behind every successful local business is an entrepreneur willing to take financial risks, overcome challenges, make personal sacrifices, and dedicate countless hours to building something meaningful. These hardworking individuals provide essential services, create opportunities, and contribute to the strength and prosperity of the communities they serve.

Our research team at Expansion Support Services, owners of the County Advisory Board, is proud to recognize Iron Horse Heating & Air, Inc., a locally owned and family-operated heating and air conditioning company serving Redding, Shasta County, and surrounding Northern California communities.

Led by owner Gavin Lowe, Iron Horse Heating & Air, Inc. has built its business around dependable workmanship, honest communication, fair pricing, and a commitment to helping residential and commercial customers stay comfortable throughout the year.

Behind the company’s success is an inspiring entrepreneurial journey that began with an opportunity to learn a trade and eventually led to a life-changing decision to pursue business ownership.

From Working Alongside a Friend to Discovering a Passion

Gavin’s journey into the HVAC industry began in 2018, when he started working alongside a friend who owned a family-operated heating and air conditioning business.

What initially began as an opportunity to gain experience gradually became something much more meaningful. Gavin enjoyed the hands-on work, the technical challenges, and the satisfaction of helping customers solve problems that directly affected their comfort and everyday lives.

By 2020, he had committed himself to the HVAC industry full-time.

Although he appreciated working with his friend and being part of a family business, Gavin had always envisioned owning a company of his own.

Determined to expand his knowledge and strengthen his professional future, he eventually pursued employment with another HVAC company that offered more consistent, year-round opportunities. He wanted to broaden his experience, continue developing his technical abilities, and establish a stronger foundation for long-term success.

That determination led him to pursue additional education, professional training, testing, and ultimately his contractor’s license.

At the time, Gavin believed earning his license would primarily help him secure better employment opportunities.

He had no idea that the licensing process itself would present an unexpected opportunity to change his future.

One Sunday Morning, One Decision, and a Leap of Faith

While completing his contractor licensing application one Sunday morning, Gavin discovered that he faced an important choice.

He could associate his license with another company or take the necessary steps to establish himself as an independent business owner.

He also learned that if he chose to work under another company and later decided to establish his own operation, he could face approximately $1,000 in additional application fees.

What started as a routine licensing decision suddenly became a defining moment.

Gavin had spent years developing his skills, gaining experience, and dreaming about owning his own business. Now, the opportunity was directly in front of him.

Rather than continue putting his dream on hold, he made the courageous decision to take a leap of faith.

With the love, encouragement, and support of his wife, Sierra, Gavin chose to pursue entrepreneurship and build Iron Horse Heating & Air, Inc.

Although business ownership presented unfamiliar responsibilities and new challenges, Gavin understood that achieving something meaningful often requires taking calculated risks and believing in one’s abilities.

His story demonstrates that sometimes the difference between working toward a dream and actually living it comes down to having the courage to make one important decision.

Building Customer Trust Through Honesty, Quality, and Accountability

In an industry where customers often need assistance during stressful situations, Gavin recognizes the importance of trust, communication, and doing the job correctly.

When an air conditioner stops working during extreme summer heat or a heating system fails during colder weather, customers want more than a temporary solution. They want to understand what went wrong, what repairs are necessary, and what they can expect from the company performing the work.

Iron Horse Heating & Air, Inc. emphasizes thorough system evaluations, clear explanations, quality equipment, and workmanship designed to deliver lasting results.

The company’s website features customer reviews highlighting Gavin’s professionalism, technical knowledge, communication, fair pricing, and attention to detail.

Customers have described positive experiences involving air conditioning repairs, ductless mini-split installations, system troubleshooting, and HVAC replacement projects.

One particularly meaningful theme throughout the feedback is Gavin’s willingness to explain the work being performed rather than simply recommending repairs without helping customers understand their options.

This customer-focused approach reflects an important principle of successful small business ownership: a company’s reputation is built one customer, one interaction, and one completed job at a time.

The Man Behind the Business: Family, Classic Trucks, and Personal Passions

His wife, Sierra, has been an important source of love and encouragement throughout his journey into entrepreneurship. Her support helped give him the confidence to pursue a dream that once seemed uncertain.

When Gavin is not working to keep Northern California homes and businesses comfortable, he enjoys spending quality time with Sierra, connecting with friends, and pursuing his personal interests.

One of his favorite projects is a 1974 Ford F-350 Crew Cab, a classic truck that gives him an opportunity to enjoy his mechanical interests and appreciation for craftsmanship.

Gavin also enjoys collecting exotic and specialty whiskies, appreciating the unique character and craftsmanship behind different selections.

These interests offer a glimpse into the individual behind the company: someone who values hard work, meaningful relationships, personal accomplishment, and the satisfaction of building something worthwhile.
