John Dixon, you are considered a champion business owner for bringing new life to Fox’s Trolling Motors and combining 30 years of electrical experience with a lifelong passion for boating and fishing that began alongside your grandfather. Your commitment to providing knowledgeable, honest service, carrying forward the legacy of a local business, and giving back to the next generation through youth fishing and motorsports makes Fox’s Trolling Motors a valued part of the Mobile County business community.

Small businesses are the backbone of an economy.

The owners of these small businesses are entrepreneurs who often take financial and business risks, provide employment opportunities, and add their creativity, experience, and ingenuity to the overall commerce of a local community, town, city, and county. Many business owners work long hours, endure challenging times, and make personal sacrifices in order to serve their customers and build something that lasts.

Our research team at Expansion Support Services, owners of the County Advisory Board, identified Fox’s Trolling Motors as a business that is appreciated by its customers and provides valuable marine repair and electrical services to boat owners throughout Mobile County and the surrounding area.

The story behind Fox’s Trolling Motors and its new owner, John Dixon, is a great example of how a lifetime of experience and an unexpected opportunity can come together to create the next chapter of a local business.

John has approximately 30 years of electrical experience, but his connection to boats and fishing goes back even further. His earliest exposure to boating and fishing came through time spent with his grandfather, who introduced him to being on the water at a young age. Those early experiences helped develop a lifelong appreciation for boats, fishing, and the knowledge that comes from spending years around the water.

That background would eventually come full circle in an unexpected way.

John’s path to owning Fox’s Trolling Motors began when he stopped by the shop after the previous owner, Vernon, had shut down regular operations and was primarily selling remaining parts.

While John was there, an opportunity came up to work on a trolling motor. After seeing John’s ability firsthand, Vernon complimented him on his knowledge and workmanship. That interaction sparked a conversation about the business, why it had closed, and ultimately what it might take to bring it back.

That conversation eventually turned into a deal.

Approximately six months ago, John purchased Fox’s Trolling Motors, reopened the doors, and began putting countless hours into rebuilding and organizing the shop to meet his own meticulous standards. He has also added his own touches to the services and customer experience, combining three decades of electrical knowledge with a lifetime of experience around boats that began alongside his grandfather.

The response from customers has already been encouraging, with recent reviews reflecting appreciation for John’s knowledge, workmanship, and level of service.

There is also still a connection to the history of Fox’s Trolling Motors. On certain days, customers may even find Vernon spending some time around the shop. It gives Fox’s the feel of a small-town marine shop right in a city the size of Mobile — a place where customers can still receive knowledgeable, straightforward service with a firm handshake and a smile.

When boaters need help with trolling motor service and repair, minor boat repairs, marine electrical troubleshooting, wiring, or just about anything electrical related to their boating needs, Fox’s Trolling Motors offers the combination of hands-on boating experience and decades of electrical knowledge that can be difficult to find.

John’s connection to the community extends beyond the shop as well. Two of his personal passions are fishing and drag racing, and he is finding ways to share those interests with younger members of the community.

Fox’s Trolling Motors sponsors Mobile Dragway, supporting an environment where young people can enjoy street-car racing in a safer, organized, and positive setting rather than taking those activities to public streets. The business is also preparing to sponsor a youth fishing tournament, helping introduce another generation to fishing and the outdoors — much like John was introduced to those experiences by his own grandfather years ago.

The continued success and new chapter of Fox’s Trolling Motors speak to John Dixon’s dedication, experience, and willingness to take on the many challenges that come with business ownership.

We take this moment to acknowledge and thank John Dixon for the past, present, and future contributions that Fox’s Trolling Motors and its staff have made and will continue to make throughout Mobile County.
